Oases
Oases have always played a fundamental role in the Sultanate’s settlement planning. Dwellings would develop adjacent to an oasis, ensuring access to fresh water and with it the cultivation of animal life and vegetation. It was the abundance of water that rendered the development of an irrigation-based system in the Sultanate possible and gave rise to a unique oasis culture.
Since the advent of modern technology, much of Oman’s oases have lost their essential role in the provision of shelter, water and food. However, many already existing oases settlements continue to thrive, their green and beautiful water pools a must-stop destination for travellers in Oman.
